Summer GSR Award for Engineering or Computer-related Applications and Methods
Continuing graduate students pursuing research in engineering, or continuing students from other disciplines, who are developing new computer-related applications and methods, such as materials science and nanotechnology, computational science, bioinformatics, and information technology. A broad definition of the relevant research fields and research topics will be used in accepting applications and the above are example areas. Students are encouraged to work with a faculty member if they are interested in submitting an application. Due to the matching fund requirement, the nomination form should be submitted by faculty only.

Date and Amount of Award
Awards will be granted for the three-month period from July 1 to September 30, 2024, with the award amount corresponding to the student's GSR salary point, as per the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), at 100% Full-Time Equivalent (FTE). At the time of award, Graduate Studies will perform an evaluation based on the CBA and determine the student’s salary point. Students who receive this award are expected to devote full-time effort during the summer under the direction of the faculty supervisor. The program provided in-kind support during the academic year shall have an appointment percentage that is commensurate with work effort.
Matching Funds
The Summer Graduate Student Researcher awards must be matched with in-kind graduate student support funds during the coming academic year. The match should consist of a minimum of 6 months (2 quarters) of GSR salary support at 50% or equivalent student support. Extramural research grants are expected to be the primary source of matching funds. Teaching Assistant appointments are not considered an appropriate match. Program Chairs are responsible for securing commitments from faculty mentors of nominated students to provide matching support during the academic year 2024-25.
Nominations
The Chairs of the Graduate Programs or designees will nominate graduate students via InfoReady. Information required for nominated students includes:
- Name, e-mail address, degree objective, and student ID
- Name, title, e-mail address and department of the faculty mentor
- Year of admission to UC Davis
- Research Project Information: A brief description of the student's research project and its relevance to engineering and the development of computer applications and methods (no more than a single paragraph)
- Student Recommendation Statement: Evidence of research ability or other creative accomplishments, intellectual capacity, promise of productive scholarship, and/or the significance of their work/contribution to the specific field (no more than a single paragraph).
- Confirmation of in-kind support funds for 2024-25 academic year
The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 3, 2024.
FOR GRADUATE PROGRAM USE ONLY
Rankings: The Graduate Program Chair or delegated faculty must provide a ranking (1 being the highest) of graduate student nominees. Programs may nominate as many students as they wish. Program rankings, combined with review ratings by Graduate Council faculty, will determine the allocation of Summer GSR Awards.
Program Rankings should be submitted via InfoReady by Program Coordinators. Coordinators will receive notification when a nomination for their program has been submitted. Once all nominations for a program have been received and reviewed, rankings should be inputted on the review form for each nomination and submitted. Program Ranking Due Date: The ranked nominations from graduate programs must be submitted to Graduate Studies by Monday, May 13, 2024.
Award Announcments: Award recipients will be announced during the week of June 3, 2024. Selected students, their faculty mentors, and program staff will be notified via email. Program staff will also receive guidance on initiating a new account to facilitate the transfer of funds from Graduate Studies to fund the GSR.
